Candle Care 101: How to Make Your Candles Last Longer
Share
You've found the perfect scent. The packaging is beautiful. The first burn is everything you hoped for. But are you getting the most out of your CERARIUS candle? With a little care, a quality candle can burn cleaner, longer, and more beautifully — every single time.
Here's everything you need to know about candle care, from the first light to the final flicker.
1. Always Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn
This is the single most impactful candle care habit you can build. Before each burn, trim your wick to approximately ¼ inch (6mm). A trimmed wick produces a smaller, steadier flame — which means less soot, less smoke, and a more even melt pool.
An untrimmed wick can mushroom at the tip, causing the flame to flicker excessively, burn too hot, and consume your wax far too quickly. A simple wick trimmer (or even nail scissors) is all you need.
Pro tip: Always trim before lighting — never trim a burning or recently extinguished candle.
2. Let the Wax Melt Edge to Edge on the First Burn
Candle wax has memory. If you extinguish your candle before the melt pool reaches the edges of the vessel on the very first burn, the wax will continue to tunnel down the center on every subsequent burn — wasting the wax along the sides and shortening the life of your candle significantly.
For CERARIUS candles, allow 2–3 hours on the first burn to achieve a full melt pool. This sets the stage for every burn that follows. For a deeper dive into the first burn ritual, read our guide: The Art of the First Burn.
3. Keep Burns Between 2–4 Hours
While you want a full melt pool, burning your candle for too long can cause the wick to move or lean, the vessel to overheat, and the fragrance to dissipate faster than intended. The sweet spot for most candles is 2 to 4 hours per session.
After 4 hours, extinguish the flame, let the wax solidify completely, re-trim the wick, and light again when ready.
4. How to Fix Candle Tunneling
Tunneling happens when a candle burns straight down the middle, leaving a thick wall of unused wax around the edges. If you've inherited a tunneled candle — or missed the first-burn window — here's how to fix it:
- The foil method: Wrap aluminum foil around the top of the candle, leaving a small opening in the center. Light the candle and let it burn for 1–2 hours. The trapped heat will melt the wax walls inward, evening out the surface.
- The oven method: Place the candle (in a heat-safe vessel) in an oven at 175°F (80°C) for about 5 minutes to soften and level the wax. Let it cool completely before burning.
Prevention is always better than correction — so commit to that first full burn.
5. Store Your Candles Properly
Candles are sensitive to light, heat, and dust. To preserve fragrance and appearance:
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- Keep the lid on when not in use to protect the wax surface and retain scent.
- Avoid storing near windows or vents — UV light can fade color and degrade fragrance oils over time.
- If storing long-term, wrap in tissue paper to prevent dust accumulation.
6. Use the Right Candle for the Right Space
Candle size matters. A small candle in a large, open room will struggle to fill the space with fragrance, while an oversized candle in a small bathroom can be overwhelming. Matching your candle to your space ensures the best scent throw and the most efficient burn.

7. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended
This one is non-negotiable. Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep. Keep burning candles away from drafts, flammable materials, children, and pets. Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
A candle snuffer is the safest way to extinguish — it prevents hot wax from splattering and eliminates the smoke that comes from blowing out a flame.
8. Know When It's Time to Stop
When approximately ½ inch (1.25cm) of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel, it's time to retire the candle. Burning below this level can cause the vessel to overheat, potentially cracking the glass or damaging the surface it rests on.
The good news? An empty CERARIUS vessel is worth keeping. Clean it out with warm soapy water and repurpose it as a small planter, a jewelry dish, or a desk organizer.
